“Mr. Watson come here!”

These were the first words uttered over the first telephone  by Alexander Graham Bell in 1873 to his assistant Mr. Watson.

Now-nearly 137 years later communication is still exciting and evolving.

Communication is vital for success in any organization. From letters across the ocean to the Pony Express and the Telegraph we are like God in that we long to communicate, stay in-touch and connect with others across the miles.

I always loved hearing the stories of Missionaries who came to church when I was a teenager. They would talk about what God was doing in their ministry in a foreign land and I would be amazed and inevitably give an offering and get on a mailing list. I can recall getting letters, newsletters and photos from as far away as Africa. I always wondered: “how long did it take for this letter to arrive.” Sometimes you could read the date of the postage stamp-sometimes you could not. I always imagined what had transpired between the time the Missionary wrote the letter when I read it.

Social Media is a huge blessing for the Missionary, Evangelist and Church who want to stay in touch with their followers. I had never heard of Facebook until a few years ago and Twitter forget it-didn’t know what that was and I did not see the value of being on YouTube. Now we are on many social networks, maintain a weekly blog, have a Flickr account and plan to stay in touch with our friends, fans, and followers for a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship.
